When asked the question “Why do you write?” I offer the classic answer, “Because I must.” But it’s still difficult to begin a project. I can create brilliant similes and metaphors in my head. I can encounter the most engaging characters in the inner world of my mind. I can evoke the deepest emotions inside my soul, bringing myself to tears. But unless I write, unless I put one word after the other, bird by bird, the beauty is fleeting. Ann Lamott’s book is an excellent resource, but its greatest value is in the title’s exhortation, Bird by Bird.
